John McNamara joined the University of Hawaii staff as associate athletics director for external affairs in February, 2004. He supervises marketing, corporate partnerships, media relations, advertising, promotions, licensing, and merchandising, as well as overseeing television, radio, computer operations, and internet initiatives. He also works closely with the ticket office and was instrumental in the launch of UH's online digital ticketing system.
McNamara ensures that all external areas are communicating and working in conjunction with each other, so the department’s efforts are coordinated and optimized. During his four-year tenure, McNamara made a big impact. He focused the department’s branding efforts and integrated them into all external programs. Marketing plans were developed for each men’s and women’s sport and the Corporate Partnership Program was given additional emphasis, resulting in a record $2.7 million in sponsorship sales. He orchestrated the creation of a new website (HawaiiAthletics.com) and weekly e-newsletters to UH fans (H-Mail). In addition, several new fan promotions and activities have been created for men’sand women’s sports. The UHAthletics Department received the 2007 “Outstanding E-Marketing Campaign” awardfrom the American Marketing Association (Hawaii Chapter) for its internet marketing initiatives and finished second for the statewide “Marketer of the Year” award.
